ILLUSTRATED NEW WAVE

THE ILLUSTRATED NEW WAVE

During 1980 and 1981 I started work on a collection of drawings to be used in an  illustrated book of lyrics from songs which had been significant in the success of the Punk and New Wave movement. The book was submitted to Omnibus Press by James Manning. At the time James was the owner of Gaumont Books in Little Collins Street Melbourne. The general consensus was that there were too many copyright issues for it to be published. Hundreds of small labels had blossomed in the late seventies and getting permission from the all would be time consuming and costly. So the book has sat on my shelf for some thirty years. Presented here is a selection of images from that book. I have also added the cover images from the relevant records all from my own collection of music from this wonderful period

RUTS - GRIN AND BEAR IT

IN A RUT (THE RUTS)

in a rut

Most of the music from the early punk days concerned the boredom of teenagers in the U.K.

In Australia things were nowhere near that bad.

Along with the boredom came songs about the suburbs.

This song was by a little known Irish punk band who only did a few singles but this was a great little pop song.

WHERE WERE YOU- THE MEKONS

This is a great song with a really exciting build up of power. One of the hundreds of great songs produced by little known acts during this influential period.

I particularly loved the lyrics of this song. The image of seeing someone in a bar for the first time and planning your entire life with them. It had a real message about insecurity for me.

IN MY AREA - THE FALL

The great thing about the New Wave was that many of the B sides to singles were as good if not better than the A sides. This song was the B side of the Rowche Rumble single and is still my favourite Fall song to this day.

HOW I WROTE ELASTIC MAN - THE FALL

Mark E. Smith didn't suffer fools and this song is pretty much about annoying fans and their inane questions. One band so many great songs.

DANCING WITH MYSELF DRAWING

Another one of the hundreds of great songs from this period. This one not so deep lyrically but a fine single nevertheless.

BODIES - THE SEX PISTOLS

This album had a huge effect on my musical taste when it was released. I was an avid reader of NME, Melody Maker and Sounds even though in Australia they were issued three months behind the UK. This band just seemed to take over the world at that time. The Australian music press was slow to get a grasp of what was happening. Television was right on the ball with all the criticism but music shows like Countdown and Night Moves didn't touch this stuff for years. Consequently they left Australian kids in the dark about this great movement in music. While this was happening we were watching shows hosted by Elton John, Rod Stewart and Hall and Oates.

The presence of this anti-abortion song on this magnificent album was quite a surprise to everybody.
