Collector Kev

COLLECTOR KEV

Collector Kev is a comic Strip I do for the Australian Cartophilic Society Newsletter which is published 6 times a year. The story-line basically follows Collector Kev and his cronies as they scour Australia for rarities to add to their collections. Kev's partner Kathy is sympathetic to Kev's challenges.

The strip is made from stories that happened to myself or other collectors who have told me their tales over the years.

EPISODE 11:

CARTOPHILIA?

COLLECTOR KEV EPISODE 11

This strip came about when Nathan Healy said to me Cartophilia sounded like a disease. I took that idea to the extreme here. I was going to credit Nathan when my brother John suggested I include him in the story. I did that and also included Sam Morabito as the Mad Doctor. Sam Nathan and I work together at Ultramix.

EPISODE 10:

TELL ME WHY

COLLECTOR KEV EPISODE 10

It always amazes me that certain cards are claimed to be rarer or more collectable than others. I'm sure this differs from collector to collector but in some instances it just seems like some dealer trying to make money. Why Coleman and not Whitten or Jesaulenko or Dyer etc etc.

EPISODE 9:

GONE TROPPO

COLLECTOR KEV EPISODE 9

It's hard to know when to take holidays if you don't want to miss out on the annual fairs and swap meets but you just have to make the call. John going to the Arctic and missing Fryerstown being the inspiration for this strip.

EPISODE 8:

CHRISTMAS TIME IS HERE AGAIN

COLLECTOR KEV EPISODE 8

EPISODE 7:

JUNK

COLLECTOR KEV EPISODE 7

EPISODE 6:

CLEAN UP TIME

COLLECTOR KEV EPISODE 6

What some people call garbage others call treasure. Mary saw my collection of wrappers and said to me now you're collecting rubbish. This strip takes that theory to the extreme.

EPISODE 5:

MR BUSINESS MAN

COLLECTOR KEV EPISODE 5

One of the problems with selling collectables is that you tend to end up with even more stuff than you started with. Or you spend all your profits buying stuff for your own collection. The story of the cards being stuck in an album the night before it was purchased is a true story told to me by a friend (Dave Devine) It's uncanny someone would do that thinking it would make them more valuable.

EPISODE 4:

DAY OF THE FAIR

COLLECTOR KEV EPISODE 4

I've been to a lot of collectors fair and some of the worst make you queue up for hours and when you reach the door you find out they only have one person selling tickets. This story is a typical day at one of those fairs.

EPISODE 3:

TIMEWARP

collector kev episode 3

I am constantly wondering what happened to things I had as a kid. I'm sure I didn't throw them out but they managed to dissappear anyway. If only we could go back in time then we could pick them all up again. Panels 14 and 15 are set back in the sixties when a lot of football cards were on the market Coles, Atlantic, Kornies, Sniders & Abrahams, Golden Fleece, and Mobil are all shown here and they were manufacturers of some of those sets of cards. Pop's Milk Bar is where I bought Scanlens 1963 Football Cards it was situated on the corner of Mason Street and Charlotte Street West Newport. Panel 18 is homage to the great cartoon Tooter and the Wizard.

EPISODE 2:

IN THE BUSHES

COLLECTOR KEV EPISODE 2

EPISODE 1:

TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE

COLLECTOR KEV EPISODE 1

This episode is probably one of the most common daydreams of all collectors we all wish we would come across that unbelievable stash of incredibly rare stuff and it costs you nothing. Unfortunately this is a very rare occurrence however every collector has at least one story of that special day when they hit the jackpot. The rarities involved in the story are well known sought after items from a range of collectables.
